Cisco Certificate Signing Request Generation

Easy Guideline to Generate a CSR on a Cisco device

If you already have your CSR created, proceed with our SSL installation instructions. If not, to properly generate a CSR, follow the steps outlined below:

Step 1 – To start with, click on Configuration > Device Management from the Cisco Adaptive Security Device Manager (ASDM).

Step 2 – Expand 'Certificate Management' and select 'Identity Certificates' and click on 'Add'.

Step 3 – Add a new 'Identity Certificate' by clicking on the 'New' button for the Key Pair as shown in the image below

Step 4 – From the window 'Add Key Pair', select the option of 'Enter new key pair name' and enter a name for the key pair. Select the Key Size as 2048 and for 'Usage', select the option of 'General Purpose'. Next, click on 'Generate Now' to create your key pair, as highlighted in the image below:

Step 5 – Now, click on the 'Select' button on the right side, to define the 'Certificate Subject DN'. Next, configure the following values in the Certificate Subject DN window, by selecting them from the drop down menu of 'Attribute', enter the appropriate value and click on 'Add'.

  • Common Name (CN): Firewall will be accessed through this name. It is normally a fully qualified domain name.
  • Department (OU): Name of your department within the organization. It is usually left blank or listed as IT/Web Security.
  • Company Name (O): The legally registered name of your company or organization.
  • Country (C ): Enter your country's two-digit code
  • State (S): Submit the name of the state where your organization is located
  • City (L): Submit the name of the city where your organization is located

Users should make sure that their entries should not exceed the limit of 64 characters. Exceeding that limit would create problems during the installation procedure.

Step 6 – Next, from the 'Add Identity Certificate' window, click on 'Advanced' as shown in the image below:

Step 7 – Type your fully-qualified domain name in the FQDN field, through which your device will be accessed externally.

Step 8 – Click 'OK' and then 'Add certificate'. After this step, you will be prompted to save the newly created CSR information as a text file (.txt extension).

Note: Please remember the file name and location, as you will need to open this file later during the SSL certificate generation process.

Step 9 – Copy the CSR and paste in the appropriate text box during the SSL certificate generation process in your account on The SSL Store.

Step 10 – After receiving the SSL certificate from the issuing Certificate Authority, proceed with the final step using our SSL installation instructions.
