SSL Boosts SEO. It's Now a Ranking Signal.
The internet is evolving. Concerns over people's personal privacy have grown into a movement that wants to see the entire internet encrypted. To push this initiative forward, in August of 2014 Google announced that SSL would be used as a ranking signal in its search results.
Google doesn't typically disclose what factors go into its ranking algorithm—it's a well-guarded secret. That's why SEO professionals are so weird—it's like they're constantly trying to crack an unsolvable code (also, they're just weird in general). But Google did disclose this small component of its algorithm. Sure you'll still need dynamic content, a well-built page and a whole host of other things, but SSL helps—every little bit helps. The 5% rankings boost from an SSL/TLS Certificate could be the difference between showing up on page one or page two.
That 5% rankings could be the difference between showing up on page one or page two.
In order to get the most out of your SSL and increase your rankings potential it's important that you enable SSL encryption across every page of your website. A lot of times sites only put HTTPS on the pages that need it—don't do that. Google serves results on a page-by-page basis—not by your site as a whole. It displays the most relevant page. So to get the added benefit of having SSL as a ranking signal, it needs to be on every page. You may have a really great blog post about a specific topic that does very well on its own, but it won't get a boost from SSL if that page isn't served over HTTPS.
And keep in mind, it's not like you need an individual SSL/TLS certificate for every single page, either. One certificate can secure your whole site–every page. It all comes down to how you configure your server and whether you have the right security solution. If you have multiple sites you need to make sure you have a Multi-Domain Certificate. If you have Sub-Domains like mail.website.com or login.website.com, you need a Wildcard certificate. But, as long as you have the correct SSL solution your whole site (or sites) can be secured with a single certificate.

So now you understand what an SSL/TLS Certificate is, how it works and what you'll need to do in order to get one issued and running on your website. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. There's a whole range of factors that determine what type of certificate is right for you and your website.
There's also additional benefits and features that you may want to take advantage of to help you leverage your newly purchased SSL Certificate for all it's worth. In order to make the right decision for you and your company, you'll need all the information.
